Why facts lose to patterns

Two things about man’s mind: 1. it is lazy, and 2. like everything else in nature, it also minimises energy consumption and effort.

So, entire childhood of man is spent in forming patterns in the mind of the world around us. That what a given event means, what a thing or living organism is to us, good or bad. Our parents, family and society helps us in forming those patterns according to which we then navigate our way through the world during our whole lives.

That is why facts matter so little to us in life. Whenever we come across a new fact, we match it with the patterns in our head. If it doesn’t fit, we simply ignore it, discard it. But if a falsehood fits any existing pattern in our head, we accept it as a fact.

Few lucky ones do take trouble to go beyond patterns and objectively verify what they observe before deciding whether it is true or false. But overwhelming majority lives through watching the TV running in their own heads, and thinking that they are looking at the world outside.
